How to Clean a Toyota Land Cruiser EGR Valve

How to Clean a Toyota Land Cruiser EGR Valve

A Toyota Land Cruiser's EGR valve can become clogged over time, and will need to be cleaned. The EGR valve, also known as the exhaust gas recirculation valve, is a crucial part of a Toyota's engine air intake. The EGR valve directs the engine's exhaust into the manifold, which cools down the engine air; the process prevents the vehicle from overheating. Cleaning the EGR valve is very important to ensure that your engine works efficiently.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Socket wrench
  • Carburetor cleaner
  • Rag
    • 1

Locate the EGR valve on the engine intake manifold. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for the exact location (see Resources below).

    • 2

Loosen and remove the bolts that secure the EGR valve in place by using a socket wrench. Remove the EGR valve from the manifold.

    • 3

Clean the EGR valve cover and inside of the valve using carburetor cleaner. Use a wire brush and rag to clean any loose dirt. Clean the valve until it moves up and down smoothly.

    • 4

Spray carburetor cleaner onto the valve mount where the EGR valve sits; also spray cleaner into the two holes under the valve mount. Clean the mount and holes with a rag.

    • 5

Insert the EGR valve back into place on the valve mount. Replace and tighten each bolt with the socket wrench.
