How to Program a Toyota Sequoia Chip Key

How to Program a Toyota Sequoia Chip Key

In order to make a spare key for your Toyota Sequoia, you need to program it. Your Toyota dealer can do this for you, but they may charge you as much as $50 for the service. The owner's manual tells you how to do it yourself. (If you've misplaced your manual, you'll have to pay for a new one.) Note that the procedure for programming the spare key depends on whether your model year is before or after 2002.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Blank transponder key
  • Pre-programmed master key (blank)
  1. MODELS FROM 1998 THROUGH 2002

    • 1

Purchase a blank transponder key. They are available on eBay for around $20.

    • 2

Have a hardware store or locksmith copy the cuts of the master key onto the transponder blank.

    • 3

Get into your car and close all the doors.

    • 4

Press and release the brake and accelerator pedals at the same time. After five seconds, insert a working, pre-programmed key (e.g. the black master key) into the ignition cylinder. Turn the key to "ON" position. Don't let more than 15 seconds pass before pressing and releasing the accelerator pedal alone five times (if you inserted the primary key--if you're using a valet key, do it four times).

    • 5

Within 20 seconds, depress and release the brake pedal alone six times for a primary key (five times for a valet key).

    • 6

Turn the key to the "OFF" position and remove the key immediately.

    • 7

Insert the unprogrammed key and turn it to "ON" within 10 seconds of removing the programmed key.

    • 8

Press and release the accelerator pedal once, within 10 seconds of turning the key. The security light should then flash for a minute. When it stops flashing, the programming is done.

    • 9

Start the vehicle with the newly programmed key to make sure it did, in fact, get programmed. If not, start over again from step 3.

    MODELS AFTER 2002

    • 1

Purchase a blank transponder key. They are available on eBay for around $20.

    • 2

Have a hardware store or locksmith copy the cuts of the master key onto the transponder blank.

    • 3

Get into your car and close all of the doors and windows.

    • 4

Insert the master key (the black key) into the ignition.

    • 5

Turn the key from "ON" to "OFF" five times.

    • 6

Open and close the driver's door six times.

    • 7

Take out the master key. Insert the un-programmed duplicate key. DO NOT TURN IT TO "ON." After 60 seconds, the duplicate key will be programmed. The THEFT light on the dashboard will go out, indicating that programming has been completed.

Tips & Warnings

  • See the Toyota Nation link below for instructions on how to program the keyless entry.

  • Some 2002 models work using pre-2002 programming, others using the post-2002 programming.
